Terry's musical training began when he was five by taking piano lessons, and continued for seven years, which during that time I sang in the church youth choirs. In sixth grade, he started drum lessons. At age 13, he and his brother, Tim formed their first rock band, “Cloudburst” and within a year was playing for Jr. and High school dances. From his first band up to the present, the dominant inspirations have been the classic rock bands with the combinations of keyboards, guitars and multiple vocals... groups such as Styx, Kansas, Boston, Rush, Elton John, etc... His biggest influences and inspirations were, to name just a few....Neil Peart, Phil Erheart and Buddy Rich. After high school, he took a turn with a heavy interest in the marching field. While attending Northeast Missouri State Univ. for two years, I joined up with the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps. He marched snare for three years,1980 - ‘82. In 1983, I moved west and marched snare with the Santa Clara Vanguard for his final year of eligibility. During that year, he co-wrote and played steel drum in the percussion ensemble which took first at the solo/ensemble with a 99.55 at the DCI Nationals. He also played a steel drum solo placing 13th in the mallet division. In 1984, he got another rock band going, “Alliance” with his brother Tim. This was up and going strong until ‘86 when I decided to go back for a real education. He received a BA in Music performance from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in ‘90, during which he arranged and instructed the Nebraska drumline for five years. The marching field kept him well occupied as well arranging and instructing as caption head for Oskaloosa, Ia High School - ‘84-’88, Blue Stars Drum & Bugle Corps - ‘87, Railmen Drum & Bugle Corps - ‘88, and the Colts Drum & Bugle Corps - ‘89. In 1992. he went on the road and play full time with the Kansas City based band “Atomic Angel” which toured the southeast part of the country playing 5 to 6 nights a week. He moved back to Oskaloosa, IA in 1994 and continued percussion arranging for marching bands, with clients in Texas, Illinois, Tennessee, and Iowa. In 1996 helped form rock-n-country band, “Ridin’ Fences” together with some of Iowa’s top musicians. From 1996 - 1998, they performed at the Iowa’s Cattle Congress, the Iowa State Fair, Freedom Rally in Humbolt, IA opening for Van Zant and Iron Butterfly, and in concert with Creedance Clearwater Revisited. In 1999, put back together "Alliance" for a reunion performance at the Iowa State Fair. "Alliance" has continued to perform at the Iowa State Fair every year since. During the summer of 2002 he performed with the Santa Clara Vanguard Alumni Drum & Bugle Corps at the Drum Corps International World Championships in Madison, WI on August 10th. January 2004, joined the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corp with the Alumni, and performed in the Rose Bowl Parade . He also continues to be the percussion instructor/arranger for Oskaloosa (Iowa) High School Marching Band.

Dr. John Hoekstra - Bass/Vocals Dr. John Hoekstra’s music career started back in 1972, where he wanted to learn to play piano. He took five and a half years of classical music lessons from his instructor, Grace Wielard from Pella, IA, learning piano. By the time he reached 10 years of age, piano wasn’t enough for him. He then wanted to learn to play trombone. From 5th grade to his junior year at Pella High School, He played tromebone for the Marching Ducth Band. By the time he reached eight grade he then wanted to play the bass guitar for the school’s jazz band. This too lasted until his junior year at school until he dropped all the school music activities to then join up with his cousin Fred Reitveld to play in the “County Line” band from Pella. Only being able to read sheet music thus far, he relearned to play the bass guitar by ear and since then found his true passion for music. As time goes on, some of the bands that he has performed in were “Back Roads” from Pella, “Southside Smitty” from Oskaloosa, and the “White Lies” band from Knoxville. He then parted from playing for one year to pursue his career as a Doctor of Chiropractic. However this departure didn’t last long when he discovered that the Quad Cities held a number of talented musicians. He then join a local band called “Backflash”, but later form “Sideshow Bob” which consisted of Richard Coburn from Nashville on guitar, Mark Jacobs from Chicago on percussion, and himself on bass. Upon completion of Palmer College of Chiropractic, Dr. John Hoekstra moved back to Oskaloosa, IA and was reunited with his cousin Fred Reitveld in the band “Renegades”. Soon he also helped out two other local bands, “Heartbrake” and “Two Bricks Shy”, and then joined the band that he enjoys the most of all, “Alliance”. Until “Alliance” came into his life, he has mostly played Country, 50’s & 60’s, and Hard Rock. Alliance is mostly 80’s rock which Dr. Hoekstra grew up with and enjoys the most. Besides playing the instrument of his choice along with the music that inspires him the most, he has been blessed with the friends and fellow musicians of “Alliance” that inspire him to be the best that he can be. As he states it himself, “These guys are more than just a group of guys making noise, this band is like my family, I’ve been in a number of bands and nothing comes close or even compares to the amount of fun, good times, and great music that we make together!”. |
